What Is J2?
We are Building Doctors. We diagnose the problem, prescribe repairs, and oversee the treatment process for sick buildings. Our purpose is to provide help, hope, and happiness to stressed building owners and residents. When a building has hidden damage due to construction defect and water intrusion, it can be difficult for homeowners to know what to do next. J2 Building Consultants was founded by Jens Johanson in 2007 to guide forensic analysis and building envelope repairs for homeowners associations navigating complex repair projects. From locations in Oregon, Washington, and Utah, J2 has managed building envelope repair projects across the country.

Our Team
J2 is a "one-stop-shop" building envelope consultant, which means our clients don't have to go to another building in another city to another company to get the priority they need. We have an in-house architect, P.E.s, project managers, and a full team of administrative and marketing staff to serve our clients' needs.

The Internship
Our engineering interns will have full access to AutoCAD, SketchUp, ENERCALC, RISA-3D, contracts and amendments, J2's custom specification library and proprietary software, as well as gaining experience in client communications, on-site work, Requests for Proposal, and more. Interns will be based in our Portland office under the mentorship of Ryan Paddock, P.E. and James Jenkins, EIT, Project Manager. Interns will also have the opportunity to travel to our Seattle and Salt Lake City offices to gain experience in each of these markets.

Our computer science interns will have the opportunity to participate in the specification, development, testing and deployment of a wide variety of business information systems. Interns will have full access to our business tools, databases, automation tools and our proprietary field data collection tools and report generators. Interns will be based in our Portland office under the mentorship of Mick Fandrich, Director of IT and Productivity. Internship location: South Portland, OR

Building Envelope Engineers
The challenges we face are very complex. We deal with existing structures that were built "many codes ago." We don't design new structures or even remodels. J2 focuses on rehabilitation that is usually unexpected and underfunded, but at the end we get to give the owner a hug and say "we did it." We rely on our team at J2. The experts aren't just architects and engineers, but also our project managers, construction professionals, and weatherization experts.

In this video - Ryan Paddock, P.E. and Director of Engineering explains the perspective of an engineer working with building owners to restore their investment. This role isn't just cranking out designs. It's investigating the problem, informing the client of what we've found, explaining options, working through value engineering and triage. After design, we guide the repair contractor through the repair process and navigating through unexpected problems during construction.
